Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson revealed he came dangerously close to a potentially fatal accident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two marshals crossed the track immediately ahead of his car
The alarming incident occurred on the third lap when track officials were observed on the circuit as Lawson was getting back on the race following an early pitstop to swap his damaged front wing
Immediately after, the Formula 1 racer Lawson spoke to his pit wall engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Could you believe what happened? I might have... taken their lives"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was seeing"
"I came out on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I arrived at Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two dudes sprinting across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, frankly, it was extremely hazardous"
"Obviously there's been a failure in communication somewhere but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a ongoing race track safety personnel can be allowed to just run across the track in that manner. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm sure we'll get some kind of clarification, but this absolutely cannot recur"
F1's overseeing organization, the global motorsport federation, is currently investigating the circumstances
"Subsequent to a first corner event, the race directors was notified that debris was present on the track at the apex of that corner" declared the governing body
"During the third lap, marshals were notified and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and recover the debris once the entire field had cleared the area"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had entered the pits, the directives to deploy marshals were rescinded and a caution signal was raised in that zone"
"Our inquiry continues what happened following that moment"
