In the course of a latest visit to Tokyo, ex- American leader Donald Trump together with the Japanese new Premier Sanae Takaichi exchanged warm compliments and vowed to enhance the already robust bilateral ties.
Donald Trump praised Takaichi as a ‘exceptional’ leader and congratulated her on becoming the nation's first woman premier. During their talks at Tokyo's Akasaka Palace, Trump expressed optimism that Takaichi would become one of the ‘great prime ministers’ of the country.
The prime minister, identified as a close associate of former Japanese leader Abe, praised Trump's initiatives to address global conflicts and reportedly pledged to nominate Trump for the prestigious award.
The two nations revealed a list of joint projects in areas such as power, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals. Japan-based companies are considering funding of up to $400bn in the US.
Additionally, Japan had earlier committed $550bn in strategic US investments, financing, and assurances as part of an arrangement to secure relief from Trump's import duties.
Such actions are seen as possibly easing any future requests from the US side for Tokyo to boost its defense expenditure. The prime minister addressed this by committing to accelerate plans to increase military budget to two percent of gross domestic product.
“Based on what I’ve heard from Shinzo and others, you are destined to be an outstanding prime minister,” Trump told Takaichi. “I’d also like to congratulate you on being the first woman prime minister. It’s a big deal,” he added.
The meeting highlights the ongoing importance of the American-Japanese alliance and sets the stage for additional collaboration on trade, security, and diplomatic areas.
